Forex Broker Fees Explained: Spread, Commission, Slippage

The Three Components of Broker Costs

Most traders only look at spread. Huge mistake. Total cost = Spread + Commission + Slippage. This article breaks down each.

Component 1: The Spread (Bid-Ask Gap)

What it is: The difference between the price you can buy at (ask) and sell at (bid).

  • Example: EUR/USD bid 1.0900 / ask 1.0905
  • Spread: 5 pips (0.0005)

How it costs you:

You buy at 1.0905 (ask). Immediately, the mid-price is 1.09025. You're down 2.5 pips before you've made a trade decision.

Spread Quotes:

  • Fixed spread: Always 1.5 pips (simple, predictable)
  • Variable spread: 0.8-5 pips depending on market (tighter normally, wide during news)

Spread in Pounds:

Brokers quote spreads in pips. Convert to £ based on your lot size:

  • Lot size: £10,000 (1 standard lot)
  • Spread: 1.2 pips
  • Cost in £: 1.2 pips × £10,000 = £12

Spread Costs Per Year (Example: EUR/USD, 1 lot, 10 trades/week):

  • Broker A: 0.8 pip spread = £8 per trade × 50/year = £400/year
  • Broker B: 1.5 pip spread = £15 per trade × 50/year = £750/year
  • Difference: £350/year from spread alone

Component 2: Commission (ECN Brokers)

What it is: A per-lot fee some brokers charge on top of spread.

  • Typical range: $4-$10 per lot
  • When charged: Usually ECN brokers
  • Applies to: Both opening and closing (so double on a round trip)

How it works:

  • Spread: EUR/USD 0.2 pips
  • Commission: $8 per lot (open) + $8 (close) = $16
  • Your actual cost on a 1-lot trade: 0.2 pips + $16

Commission in Pounds:

  • Cost per trade (opening): $8 ≈ £6.40
  • Cost per trade (closing): $8 ≈ £6.40
  • Total round-trip cost: £12.80

Commission vs Spread Comparison (1-lot trade):

  • Broker A (STP): 1.5 pip spread = £15 cost
  • Broker B (ECN): 0.2 pip spread + $16 commission = 0.2 pips (£2) + £12.80 = £14.80
  • ECN is slightly cheaper (£0.20 per trade)

When Commission Breaks Even:

Larger lot sizes favor ECN:

  • £10k lot: ECN commission is $16, STP spread is £15. ECN wins by £0.20.
  • £100k lot: ECN commission is still $16, STP spread is £150. ECN wins by £134.

At higher lot sizes, ECN saves money despite commission.

Component 3: Slippage (The Hidden Cost)

What it is: The difference between your intended fill price and actual fill price.

  • Example: You see EUR/USD at 1.0900 on chart. Your order fills at 1.0905.
  • Slippage: 5 pips

Why Slippage Happens:

  • Network delay: Your order takes 50-200ms to reach broker, market has moved
  • Broker processing: Broker takes time to route order, market has moved
  • Market volatility: Price is moving fast, by the time you hit buy, price is higher
  • Broker manipulation: (Unregulated brokers) Intentionally fill you at worse price

Slippage in Normal Conditions:

  • ECN brokers: 0-1 pip slippage (rare)
  • STP brokers: 0-2 pips slippage (normal)
  • Market makers: 0-5 pips slippage (can be manipulated)

Slippage During News Events:

  • ECN brokers: 1-5 pips slippage (still best)
  • STP brokers: 5-20 pips slippage (spreads widen, price jumps)
  • Unregulated brokers: Can be 50+ pips (order rejections or requotes)

Slippage Cost Per Year (EUR/USD, 10 trades/week, 2 pips average slippage):

  • 2 pips per trade × £10,000 lot = £20 per trade
  • £20 × 50 trades/year = £1,000/year

Slippage can exceed spreads and commission combined.

Total Cost Calculation: Real Examples

Scenario 1: Beginner, STP Broker

  • Instrument: EUR/USD
  • Lot size: £10k
  • Frequency: 10 trades/week = 50/year
  • Average spread: 1.5 pips = £15/trade
  • Average slippage: 1 pip = £10/trade
  • Commission: None

Annual cost: (£15 + £10) × 50 = £1,250

Scenario 2: Active Trader, ECN Broker

  • Instrument: EUR/USD
  • Lot size: £10k
  • Frequency: 20 trades/week = 1,000/year
  • Spread: 0.2 pips = £2/trade
  • Commission: $16/round-trip = £12.80/trade
  • Slippage: 0.5 pip = £5/trade

Annual cost: (£2 + £12.80 + £5) × 1,000 = £19,800

Scenario 3: Swing Trader, STP Broker + Overnight Fees

  • Instrument: GBP/USD
  • Lot size: £10k
  • Frequency: 5 trades/week = 250/year
  • Spread: 1.2 pips = £12/trade
  • Commission: None
  • Slippage: 1 pip = £10/trade
  • Swap fee: -2.5 pips/night = -£25/night
  • Assume average hold: 3 nights per trade

Spread + Slippage: (£12 + £10) × 250 = £5,500

Swap cost: £25 × 3 nights × 250 trades = £18,750

Total annual cost: £5,500 + £18,750 = £24,250

Insight: For swing traders, swap fees dwarf spread costs. Choosing a broker with lower swap rates saves more than choosing one with tighter spreads.

How Brokers Disclose Fees (And Hide Them)

What's Always Disclosed:

  • Spreads (usually)
  • Minimum deposits
  • Commission (if any)

What's Often Hidden:

  • Swap rates (buried in a PDF)
  • Slippage (not disclosed, only discovered through testing)
  • Inactivity fees (charged after 6 months no trading)
  • Withdrawal fees (not mentioned on homepage)

How to Find Hidden Fees:

  1. Visit 'Terms & Conditions' page
  2. Search for 'fee', 'charge', 'inactivity', 'withdrawal'
  3. Look for PDF titled 'Pricing' or 'Fees Schedule'
  4. Check for swap rates (usually in a table by instrument)

The Broker Cost Comparison Tool (Template)

Create a spreadsheet with these columns:

  • Broker Name
  • EUR/USD spread
  • Commission (if any)
  • GBP/USD spread
  • Swap (GBP/USD)
  • Min deposit
  • Withdrawal fee
  • Inactivity fee

Then calculate annual cost for YOUR trading pattern.

Cost Optimization Strategies

1. For Scalpers: Prioritize low spreads + slippage - Use ECN brokers - Accept commission to get tight spreads

2. For Swing Traders: Prioritize low swap rates - Compare swap rates first - Spread is secondary

3. For Beginners: Prioritize simplicity - STP broker with low spreads on majors - No commission needed

4. For High-Volume Traders: Prioritize volume discounts - Some brokers offer lower commission at 100+ lots/month - Negotiate if you're a big trader

Conclusion: Calculate Your True Cost

Don't choose a broker based on advertised spread. Calculate your actual annual cost based on:

  • ✓ Your trading frequency
  • ✓ Your average hold duration
  • ✓ Your typical lot size
  • ✓ All fees: spread, commission, slippage, swap, inactivity

The broker with the lowest advertised spread often isn't the cheapest broker overall.
