Scalping, News Trading, and EA Restrictions

Specific trading strategies trigger broker intervention mechanisms despite appearing within normal market activity. Understanding which strategies carry restriction risk prevents account closure after profitable operation.

Brokers rarely advertise strategy restrictions in marketing materials. Limitations appear in legal terms as vague prohibitions: "abusive trading," "arbitrage exploitation," "excessive scalping frequency." These phrases lack precise definition, allowing brokers to selectively enforce after determining trader profitability.

The pattern is consistent: demo account shows no restrictions, early live trading proceeds normally, restrictions activate once account demonstrates consistent profitability or pattern matches flagged strategy profile. By this point, capital is committed and withdrawal becomes contentious.

High-Risk Strategy Categories

Scalping

Definition: Trades held <1-5 minutes targeting 1-5 pip profit

Why Restricted: High frequency prevents effective internalisation, forces immediate LP hedging

Common Terms: "Minimum 60-second hold time," "excessive trade frequency prohibited"

Enforcement: Account flagged after 50-100 scalp trades, commission surcharges applied, or account closure

News Trading

Definition: Entering positions immediately before/after economic releases

Why Restricted: LP quote withdrawal during news creates broker execution risk and loss

Common Terms: "Trading during abnormal market conditions," "volatile period execution discretion"

Enforcement: Spread widening to 20-50 pips, order rejection, post-trade cancellation citing force majeure

Latency Arbitrage

Definition: Exploiting price feed delays between broker and market

Why Restricted: Profits from broker operational deficiency, creates direct loss

Common Terms: "Manipulative trading practices," "arbitrage exploitation prohibited"

Enforcement: Immediate account closure, profit confiscation, ban from re-registering

Expert Advisors (EAs)

Definition: Automated trading algorithms executing without manual intervention

Why Restricted: EAs can execute restricted strategies (scalping, arbitrage) at scale

Common Terms: "Algorithmic trading subject to review," "EA trading discretion reserved"

Enforcement: Account flagged for manual review, EA-specific commission increases, strategy blocking

Grid Trading

Definition: Opening multiple buy/sell orders at set price intervals

Why Restricted: Creates high margin utilisation, complex liquidation if market moves adversely

Common Terms: "Maximum position limits," "excessive simultaneous orders"

Enforcement: Position count limits (e.g., 50 open trades max), increased margin requirements

Hedging

Definition: Simultaneously holding long and short positions on same pair

Why Restricted: Some brokers (especially US-regulated) prohibit hedging entirely

Common Terms: "FIFO (first in, first out) required," "hedging not permitted"

Enforcement: Opposite orders automatically close existing positions, hedging attempts rejected

Why This Matters When Choosing a Broker

Hidden T&C Clauses: Strategy restrictions hide in lengthy terms & conditions using deliberately vague language. "Abnormal trading patterns" could mean scalping, news trading, or any profitable pattern broker dislikes. Interpretation is unilateral—broker decides what's "abnormal."

Delayed Enforcement: Restrictions don't activate immediately. Broker allows normal operation during unprofitable period or small account size. Once profitability emerges or capital grows, restriction enforcement begins. This creates sunk cost bias—trader invested time/money before discovering incompatibility.

Profit Confiscation Risk: Brokers can void trades executed using "prohibited" strategies, even if prohibition was never explicitly communicated. Profits disappear from account; deposits returned (if lucky). Some brokers claim entire account violates terms, complicating withdrawal.

Testing Environment Mismatch: Demo accounts never replicate live account restrictions. EA running perfectly on demo may face execution delays, requotes, or order rejection on live account. This prevents accurate strategy validation before capital commitment.

Reality Check

If your strategy falls into any restricted category, assume incompatibility until proven otherwise through explicit written confirmation and successful multi-week live testing. Marketing claims of "all strategies welcome" mean nothing without contractual backing.

Strategy Pre-Validation Process

Before committing capital to specific strategy at new broker:

  1. T&C Audit: Read full terms & conditions searching for: "scalping," "news trading," "arbitrage," "abusive," "abnormal," "manipulative." Any occurrence flags potential restriction.
  2. Written Confirmation: Email support asking explicitly: "Does [broker name] permit [specific strategy description]? Are there any hold time requirements, frequency limits, or execution restrictions?" Request written response—verbal confirmation has no value.
  3. Minimum Deposit Test: Open account with smallest allowed deposit. Run actual strategy (not demo) for 2-4 weeks. Monitor for: execution quality changes, requotes increasing, commission surcharges appearing, account flags/warnings.
  4. Community Validation: Search broker reviews specifically filtering for your strategy type. Scalpers search "[broker] scalping restrictions," news traders search "[broker] news trading experience." Pattern of complaints indicates systematic restriction.
  5. Regulatory Jurisdiction Check: US-regulated brokers prohibit hedging entirely (FIFO rule). This is legal requirement, not broker choice. Some strategies incompatible with certain jurisdictions regardless of broker preference.
